"Very dissapointed..."

A review of Coldham Hall Tavern by Melvyn Burchell written on Monday 25th of October 2010

I remember the Coldham Hall of old and yes the lace was in need of redecorating but the food and beer was always excellent and amongst the top of the list of my favorite Broads pubs to visit whilst boating... Do much so that the plan was to spend our last night there this year (22/10/10)....

First impression - it looks fresher with obvious improvements to the quay heading... But in looking fresher I could not help but feel it had lost that rustic charm and character...

The beer was not bad - seems that they have changed from pumped ale to cask - which is no bad thing...

The food and service were frankly appaling...

To be fair the soup (cream of pumpkin and carrot) was nice with a nice hot fresh roll - but at £5.75 it for a soup starter it should be...

The main course was by far the worst dining experience I haved received after many years frequenting Broads pubs... I ordered the gammon egg and chips whilst my partner ordered a salad which was not on the menu but they said they could accomodate this request.

My gammon eggs and chips arrived with the toughest low quality peice of gammon I have ever been served - it tasted awful and was not edible, the fried eggs were cold with absolutely no sign of a runny yoke anywhere. The chips (few though they were) I ate - these were luke warm and soggy... There was a small pile of cress leaves with olive oil dressing - none too enticing! My partners salad was a joke... It was a big pile of those cress leaves again (no other vegetables) with shaved parmesan cheese (which tasted old) - £4.50 for this! - althugh the dressing was a little more enticing with added balsamic vinegar added to the obligitory olive oil... Needless to say there was little food consumed on our table.

We complained about the food and the waitress merely said 'sorry' and walked off!!! When we asked for the bill we were given no discount whatsoever... I would have refused to pay but feared that as we were moored outside they may retaliate by casting us adrift during the night... Had I driven to the pub I would have walked out without paying... This was by far the worst dining experience I have received in my 30 years or so of visiting the Broads and the many wonderful experiences the area has to offer... I will certainly not be returning under the current regime.
